International Education Week (IEW), November 18-22, 2024, is an opportunity to celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide. This joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education is part of our efforts to promote programs that prepare Americans for a global environment and attract future leaders from abroad to study, learn, and exchange experiences.

Monday – November 13
Origami Demonstration
- Time: 9:00 - 10:00 AM

Professor Yoshiko Green and the Japanese Club at IUSB will kick the IEW events off with a demonstration on how to fold a paper crane, flower, box, and other paper creations.
Discussion of the Situation in Armenia / Azerbaijan
- Time: 2:30 -3:30 PM
- Location: DW 1160
In this short talk, Professor Shlapentokh will discuss his insights on the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan. He has just returned from Armenia and has first-hand impressions and insights about the situation there. All are welcome to learn about this important, but too often forgotten, conflict.

Knitting for Peace
- Time: 12:00 – 1:30 PM
- Location: Schurz Library – 5th Floor
Bring your needles and yarn (or we can lend you what you will need) to sit a while in good company as you stitch up your next needlework project. There will be a brief presentation on how Americans have deployed needle and yarn to comfort the afflicted, clothe the chilled, foment revolution, promote peace, and spread the word.
In addition to needles and yarn, we will also provide patterns for clothing and whimsies!
Study Abroad Roundtable on Leading Study Abroad Trips

Great for faculty interested in developing study abroad programs, but also colleagues interested in studying abroad in general.
Japanese Dumpling Demonstration

Join Professor Yoshiko to learn how to make dumplings. There will be dumplings for you to try. Also, enjoy a sneak peek of the dance performance by Professor Yoshiko and guest lecturer Akane Yamakita before their full performance on Thursday!

La musique en français - Music in French

Join French F203 students in class as they present a song based on this semester's themes. You'll get to listen to each song, learn about the meaning, and listen to the student's translation process for a few lines. If time allows, guests can introduce us to their favorite international songs too!
Japanese Dance Performance

Professor Yoshiko Green and guest lecturer, Akane Yamakita, will discuss and demonstrate traditional Japanese dances. Come join in the dance!
Discussion of the International Studies Minor

As part of the developing Academic Masterplan, faculty are reviewing curricular requirements. Students and faculty involved in international studies are invited to attend an open discussion of the international studies minor and give input about the existing requirements.
"Loaded Questions" en Français
- Time: 5:30 – 6:30 PM

Join the French Club for a game of Loaded Questions, a game in which we get to know other participants by guessing each other's answers to personal questions. Fluency in French is encouraged, but not necessary as English translations will be provided for the questions, and you may answer in English.

Thanksgiving Pie Festival and Photography Art Exhibition

Let’s celebrate all the things we’re thankful for with a plate of pie! You’ll learn more about why pie is one of America’s favorite desserts at Thanksgiving and throughout the year. International students will showcase their cultures with performances and demonstrations, and they’ll share memories of how they and their families give thanks.
The photography exhibition showcases the artistic talents of international students through photography. This can be a great way to gain insight into our international students’ unique perspectives.
Discussion with Carlos Brito, long-term IU South Bend partner for study abroad program to Mexico

As part of study abroad trips to Mexico going back many years, IU South Bend has been partnering with Carlos Brito. Drop by in this open session to say hello to Carlos and hear about plans for the IU South Bend program to Mexico in 2024.
