English Proficiency Documentation Options for Admission
If English is not your native language, you must demonstrate proficiency in English prior to admission to both undergraduate and graduate degree programs.
Click here to view the list of countries from which IUSB recognizes English as the native language.
Please note:
In addition to meeting the English language proficiency requirement for admission, all first-time international undergraduate students and transfer students must take placement exams in English and Mathematics upon arrival, unless otherwise exempt. Additional details about the placement tests and exemptions can be found on the English Placement Test page.
Most non-native English speaking graduate students will also be required to take English placement tests upon arrival, unless otherwise exempt. Additional details about the placement tests and exemptions can be found on the English Placement Test page.
Some graduate programs may require a higher level of English proficiency than listed here. Please review the admission requirements for the program to which you will apply.
Non-degree students may be admitted without demonstrating English language proficiency at the discretion of the admitting academic unit.
Students may sit for the IU South Bend Interim Placement Examination in order to document English language proficiency. However, this must be approved and arranged through our English as a Second Language program. Please contact the Office of International Student Services for more information.
